November news & iris folding

Hello! So much has been happening recently, I’m so busy! I’ve had to take a step back from crafting for the past couple of weeks because I have so much university work. This is a bit upsetting because I know that as time goes on my uni workload will get a lot bigger as I get more and more projects to work on, so I’m thinking that I won’t have much (if any) time to craft as the year goes on.

However, I will try to keep up to date with iris folding patterns, and keep sending them out to my pattern testers. I’ll also try and add some monthly freebies for November, but it won’t be for a while yet.

Some exciting news – I’m going to the HobbyCrafts show at the NEC this week and will be helping out on the CraftsUPrint stall and running workshops for the public. I’m really nervous but super excited too. I’ll be at the show all day Friday and Saturday, and I hope to meet lots of you there!

Here are some more iris folding cards that people have sent me – thank you! As ever, click the picture to view the pattern on craftsuprint where it can be purchased.

Here are some lovely Christmas cards made by my pattern testers using my new iris folding patterns. All of these iris folding patterns are available for sale on craftsuprint for only 80p each. Click the pictures to see the pattern on craftsuprint.

Spotlight on… Iris Folding

iris-folding

Iris folding is a paper craft technique that involves folding strips of colored paper in such a way to form a design. The center of the design forms an iris — a shape reminiscent of the iris diaphragm of a camera lens. [Source: Wikipedia]

Over time, iris folding has evolved so that now not all patterns focus on the center “iris” design. Techniques such as paper piecing, fancy folding and multi-folds are now used to create more intricate and complex designs. Iris Folding looks like it takes hours to do, and often looks complicated, but in fact it is very simple and does not take much time at all to product something stunning.

There are over 1,100 iris folding patterns available for purchase on craftsUprint, for only 80p each! Once you have bought the pattern, you can print it out and use it as many times as you want! I personally have over 200 patterns for sale designed by myself, some of which are shown below.

I wrote some instructions on how to iris fold, fancy fold and paper piece and they are available for free on craftForums.co.uk. There are some additional instructions by Silvia Griffin on how to complete iris folding with several apertures.

October Iris Folding

Here are the next lot of iris folding patterns that have been made up by generous volunteers. I know there are a few of you waiting to be sent another pattern, but I have to ask you to bear with me for a while as I’ve run out, and need to make some more! I started my final year of university last week, so things are a bit hectic at the moment, but as soon as I get a spare couple of hours I will do some designing :-)

Click the name of the pattern to view it on craftsuprint. All of these patterns are available for sale at only 80p each!

Iris Folding Cards

Here are the latest photographs that have been sent to me by my iris folding pattern testers.

If you have sent me a photograph of a card made with one of my “number” patterns, please don’t worry that I haven’t shown your card yet, I’m just waiting for all the numbers to be back before I release the patterns. I’m still waiting for 0, 1, 3 & 9, so if you have one of those patterns to test, I would really appreciate it if you could send me your photos as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, I’ve had a few people who I sent patterns to four weeks ago and haven’t heard anything back since. If you are one of those people, PLEASE reply to my reminder email that I send you a week or so ago. If you are unable to test the pattern, PLEASE let me know so that I can pass them to somebody else. Thank you!

Free Duck Iris Folding Pattern

duck-preview

Here is a free iris folding pattern for you of duck.

This pattern is suitable for any level of iris folder, however it does contain some paper piecing (the duck’s beak).

To make the card in the photograph, I first cut a lace-effect panel using my Craft Robo and the template “Two GSD Lace Panel Card Toppers” (cup237764_172). I traced the pattern onto the back of the lace panel and then cut it out and completed the iris folding. I drew on an eye and paper pieced the beak. I stuck the lace panel to an A5 base card. Both the base card and iris folding were completed using textured brown card to give the appearance of feathers.
